Totally Geek to Totally Chic!
I watched my childhood favourite, Can't Buy Me Love last night, for the first time in about fifteen to twenty years. First of all: Patrick Dempsey grew up good. Second: Ronnie Miller, king of the geeks in the eighties, would, in present-day New York, qualify as a hipster. He's got the tight jeans, the Seinfeldian white sneakers, heavy-rimmed glasses and a beret, either a plain white shirt (remember, this was post-James-Dean but pre-Calvin-Klein-minimalism-of-the-90s) or a black one that has a picture of the solar system, a line indicating the middle, and the words "You Are Here" in caps. It's not technically irony, but it's a funny, geeky black t-shirt: a standard part of the hipster uniform. Ronald Miller, in today's Brooklyn, would never wear an ascot or gel his hair or rip the sleeves off his button-downs. Ronald Miller would be cooler than all the jocks put together.
All of which begs the question: is hipsterdom a subversive form of revenge from guys who were geeks in the 80s?

Hipsterism is a Revenge of the Dorks. Revenge of the Nerds is Silicon Valley. Emoism is revenge of the nitwits.
I offer social anthropology seminars on weekends.
