National Hislop Day
June 10th should forever be known as National Hislop Day in Trinidad. This game was astounding. To put it in perspective, for those of you who don't know, the Trinidadians are ranked 50th by Fifa, while the Swedes are ranked 14th. Sure, Trinidad have Dwight Yorke and... well, that's pretty much it. And this guy Hislop, a former NASA intern, in goals, incredible. But Sweden have Ibrahimovic, and Freddie frickin' Ljungberg, and Larson, who is the fifteenth highest goal-scorer in the tournie... This was nuts!!
Moreover, Trinidad were playing with ten men for the entire second half. When Avery got sent off, I thought, "That's it; it's over; well, at least they had a good first half." But they kept off the Swedes for the rest of it!
The fans were hilarious. By half-time, the Swedes were morose and silent, like, "We haven't scored? Seriously?" while the Trinidadians kept up a steady level of noise for the whole game, all "Woooo!! We haven't let them score!!" They didn't care about actually scoring, I think. It wasn't about winning; it was about not losing.
Well, Freddie was still the best underwear model on the field. That should comfort him.
