The Big Apple vs... the Big... fig?
Life in New York vs Life in Istanbul
New York:
Wake up depending on class schedule - sometimes 9, sometimes 6:30, if teaching. Put on kettle. Shower. Make coffee, drink it while dressing. Glance at email and headlines. Eat a banana for breakfast in the elevator. Work: read, write, go to class, teach, etc. Get a take-out salad for dinner. Eat it while watching bad tv due to lack of cable. Read until fall asleep.
Istanbul:
Wake at around 11 or 12. Make coffee. Leisurely read news, blogs, email, and PG Wodehouse. Discuss plans for the day. Read some more. Shower. Leave house. Eat late, long breakfast at local expat cafe. If feel up to it, accomplish something such as going to the beach, buying shampoo, doing dishes, visiting museum, or cooking dinner. (More than one accomplishment per day is not allowed.) If do not feel up to doing anything, read and nap until hungry again. Eat and drink, likely at rooftop cafe from which one is able to contemplate the problems of the world, and self's particularly pressing problems (we need to wake early so the cleaning lady can come! we really must hit the sales before all the good stuff is gone! where will we eat tomorrow!?) in peace. If feel like dancing, drink espresso and talk way into posh club. Take a cab home. Read until fall asleep.
And I'm leaving in less than 48 hours... why?
