[insert symbol here]

One of my kids is a post-modernist in the making. He said his character didn't have a name so, when writing in the third person, he used a symbol to express the character. Rather than start a complicated and gap-filled lecture about semantics, I said, "Like Prince."
The kid looked at me through his mop of hipster-inspired hair and said, "Huh?"
Me: "Like Prince. You know, The Artist Formerly Known As."
Blank stares.
I didn't know feeling old was part of the teaching deal.
